- Occurs after FNA or surgery
- Rare, reported in other sites as genitourinary system and breast (Am J Clin Pathol 1999;111:70)

- Thyroid mass
- History of surgery or FNA

Microscopic (histologic) description
- Spindle cell proliferation
- Bland cytology, no pleomorphism
- Low mitotic count, no atypical mitoses
- Other features may be seen as scattered inflammatory cells and histiocytes, focal myxoid change and delicate blood vessels
Cytology description
- Spindle cells with histiocytes, vague granulomatous pattern
Electron microscopy description
- Characteristic myofibroblastic features
Differential diagnosis
- Recurrence of the lesion
- Spindle cell lesions of the thyroid:
- Medullary carcinoma
- Sarcoma
- Schwannoma
