Definition / general
- The four key human mismatch repair genes identified to date are MutL Homologue 1 (MLH1), MutS Homologue 2 (MSH2), MutS Homologue 6 (MSH6), and PostMeiotic Segregation increased 2 (PMS2), homologous to the E. coli MMR genes
- MSH1 gene is not found in humans
- MSH1 encodes a protein homologous to the Escherichia coli Mut S and Streptococcus pneumonia Hex A protein
- It is important for mitochondrial DNA repair and stability
- It binds to base-base and small insertion-deletion mismatches in mRNA
- In plants, its suppression leads to emergence of abnormal plant phenotypes (Nat Commun 2015;6:6386)
- In yeast, its loss of function causes a petite phenotype (Genetics 1992;132:975)
