Quarter 4 - 2023 totals

For this quarter, PathologyOutlines.com listed 339 full or part time pathologist job postings, which form the basis for the statistics below. This is a 5.3% increase from the 322 jobs posted in the fourth quarter of 2022 (click here). We excluded postings that were only for locum, Ph.D., residency, fellowship or nonpathologist positions. Of the 339 postings, 311 listed 1 position, 12 listed 2 positions and 16 listed an unspecified number of positions greater than 1.

Of the 339 ads, 163 (48.1%) were for academic positions and 176 (51.9%) were for nonacademic positions, compared to 45.0% academic positions in the fourth quarter of 2022. We define academic as an assistant, associate or full professor position or a university position other than lecturer or that is solely clinical in nature.

Jobs were posted from 43 of 50 states, 2 provinces in Canada (Alberta and Ontario) and Puerto Rico. New York (28), Texas (27), Florida (24), Ohio (21), California (21), and Georgia (18) had the most job listings. The 7 states with no job ads were Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota and Utah. The Canadian provinces not represented are British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan. There was 1 job listed as a remote position in the U.S.

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, U.S.A. - South took a significant lead over the Northeast in distribution of job ads.

78.5% of postings required AP or AP / CP board certification / eligibility, compared to 77.3% for the fourth quarter of 2022. 51.9% required AP / CP boards and 3.5% required CP board certification only. 50 postings (14.8%) did not specify board certification. Of these 50 postings, 33 were academic and 17 were nonacademic.
