Quarter 3 - 2023 totals


For this quarter, there were 382 job postings at PathologyOutlines.com for full or part time Pathologists, which form the basis for the statistics below. This is a 7.5% decrease from the 413 job postings in the third quarter of 2022 (click here for the jobs report from 2022 Quarter 3). We excluded postings that were only for locum, Ph.D., residency, fellowship or non-Pathologist positions. Of the 382 postings, 353 were for 1 position, 9 were for 2 positions and 20 were for an unspecified number of positions greater than 1.

Of the 382 ads, 201 (52.6%) were for academic positions and 181 (47.4%) were for non-academic positions, compared with 53.0% academic positions in the third quarter of 2022. We define academic as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position or a University position other than lecturer or solely clinical in nature.

Jobs were posted from 45 states, the District of Columbia, 6 provinces in Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan) as well as New Zealand and Puerto Rico. New York (42), California (27), Texas (25), New Jersey (21), Florida (20) and Pennsylvania (20) had the most job listings. The 5 states with no job ads were Delaware, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Wyoming. The Canadian provinces not represented were Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

This distribution of positions was comparable to the third quarter of 2022, except for an increase in jobs in the Northeast over the South this quarter.

72.0% of postings required AP or AP / CP board certification / eligibility, compared with 75.6% for the third quarter of 2022. 50.5% required AP / CP boards and 3.1% required CP board certification only. 77 (20.2%) postings did not specify board certification, which is comparable to 17.0% in the third quarter of 2022. Of these 77 postings, 54 were academic and 23 were non-academic.
