Quarter 4 - 2021 totals
For this quarter, there were 372 job postings at PathologyOutlines.com for full time or part time Pathologists, which form the basis for the statistics below. This is a 55.0% increase from the 240 job postings in the fourth quarter of 2020 (click here). There were 142 job postings in October, 128 in November and 102 in December 2021. We excluded postings that were only for locum, Ph.D., residency, fellowship or non-Pathologist positions. Of the 372 postings, 353 were for 1 position, 11 were for 2 positions, 2 were for 3 positions and 6 were for an unspecified number of positions greater than 1.
Of the 372 ads, 182 (48.9%) were for academic positions and 190 (51.1%) were for non-academic positions, compared to 46.2% academic positions in the fourth quarter of 2020. We define academic as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position or a University position other than lecturer or solely clinical in nature.
Jobs were posted from 42 of 50 states, the District of Columbia, 7 provinces in Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec) as well as Jordan and New Zealand. New York (43), Pennsylvania (26), California (23), Texas (22), Florida (19), Massachusetts (18) and Ohio (17) had the most job listings. . The nine states with no job ads were Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Virginia and Wyoming. The Canadian provinces not represented are Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, there were no substantial changes in distribution of job ads.
70.2% of postings required AP or AP/CP board certification / eligibility, compared to 73.7% for the fourth quarter of 2020. 50.3% required AP/CP boards and 9.4% required CP board certification only. 63 postings (16.9%) did not specify board certification, similar to the rate for jobs posted in the fourth quarter of 2020. Of these 63 postings, 37 were academic and 26 were nonacademic.

For this period, 331 (89.0%) jobs required or desired a specific subspecialty or title, most commonly hematopathology, cytopathology, molecular, GI / liver, gynecologic and breast.
