Quarter 4 - 2013 totals
For this quarter, there were 72 job postings (ads) for full time or part-time pathologists at PathologyOutlines.com, which form the basis for the statistics below. We have excluded postings that were only for locum, PhD or non-Pathologist positions. Of the 72 postings, 66 were for 1 position, 1 was for 2 positions, 1 was for 3 positions, and 4 were for an unspecified number of positions greater than one.
Of the 72 ads, 38 (53%) were for academic positions, and 34 (47%) were for non-academic positions. We define academic as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position at a University.
For this quarter, most postings were from the US. Jobs were posted for 26 of 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Four states had 39% of the postings (New York-10, California-6, Massachusetts-6, Pennsylvania-6).
Totals by regions: (click here for map of US regions):
Regions:
78% of postings required AP or AP/CP Board certification/eligibility, with only 19% accepting CP only (the rest were indeterminate).
Minimum requirements (board certified/board eligible):
Fellowship training is now required for most positions, with 46% requiring surgical pathology (unspecified), cytopathology or hematopathology. Somewhat surprising in this sample were the low number of job ads for GU or pediatric pathologists. To determine the statistics below, we tried to determine from the text of the ads what fellowship training was essential for a Pathologist, or what the type of position was (Director, Chief, Medical Director).
Required training / experience:
Note: Some positions list multiple specialities
Twenty eight of the 72 ads also listed one of more subspecialties / activities that would be "an asset" or otherwise helpful. The most common was research for academic institutions, followed by molecular, bone and soft tissue, GI/Liver, Hematopathology and a surgical pathology fellowship of some type.
Other desired specialities:
