Definition / general
- Usually restricted to patients with immunocompromise (HIV, J Int Assoc Physicians AIDS Care (Chic Ill) 2002;1:53), diabetes, antibiotic therapy or scleroderma (Semin Arthritis Rheum 2006;36:173)
- Most cases due to Candida (eMedicine: Infectious Esophagitis Imaging [Accessed 12 January 2018]), herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus
- Should consider infectious causes if ulcer or exudate is present
- In immunocompromised, initially systemic fluconazole for presumed Candida (Curr Treat Options Gastroenterol 2003;6:55)
