Medical Knowledge, Practice Based Learning and Systems Based Practice
  1. Recognize that while nonproliferative breast disease can be classified as a benign lesion by FNA cytology, FNA findings in proliferative breast disease (which includes usual ductal hyperplasia, atypical ductal hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ) show significant cytomorphologic overlap, making definitive subclassification difficult
  2. Recognize that the presence of any cytologic atypia on FNA warrants excisional biopsy and histologic examination for definitive diagnosis
