Medical Microbiologist (Clinical Section Chief)
CALGARY, ALBERTA (CANADA).
Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) and the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) are
seeking an experienced Medical Microbiologist with the interest and leadership ability to lead the CLS
Microbiology Section as Clinical Section Chief. The ideal applicant will have at least 5 years of Medical
Microbiologist experience and will possess expertise in routine and complex clinical microbiology within a
high-volume, rapidly changing environment. Candidates must have strong references and possess a strong
track record of collegiality with co-workers. Previous experience leading a team of Medical professionals in
a laboratory environment is a definite asset.
CLS is a multi-site, regionalized laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services to Calgary and
surrounding communities. CLS processes >25,000,000 total tests within all laboratory disciplines, that
includes analysis of >1,000,000 microbiology samples annually. CLS Microbiology also provides
supervision and medical consultation to services in Southern Alberta. The successful candidate will be
required to provide diagnostic microbiology consultation, laboratory and technical expertise, and strategic
guidance in microbiology and molecular diagnostics and should have experience in a high volume setting
with a similar case complexity. The successful candidate will join CLS Microbiology’s complement of
medical staff, which currently has 7 FTE.
Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, is located within an hour’s drive of the Rocky Mountains, and within a
half day’s drive of eight national parks. There are many opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities
(three nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites, world class athletic facilities, and many cultural events.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
Medical Microbiologists must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery
of services to match established performance indicators and turn-around times, must actively participate in
such activities as quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement programs, and are expected to
provide on-call services. CLS Microbiology is academically affiliated with the University of Calgary,
providing support to several Royal College Graduate Training Programs such as Medical Microbiology and
Infectious Diseases and provides academic support to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. This
position will be expected to actively participate in teaching students, residents and fellows.
As a permanent Medical Microbiologist position assuming the leadership and administrative responsibilities
as the Microbiology Clinical Section Chief (CSC), this position will report to the Vice President, Medical
Operations and Zone Clinical Department Head (AHS). The CSC position functions within a dyad
relationship with the Clinical Section Manager. The Microbiology CSC provides front line medical leadership
for Microbiology medical staff and strategic direction for the clinical section in alignment with the CLS vision.
The responsibilities as the Microbiology Clinical Section Chief will be in effect on a five year term, after
which the CSC appointment may be renewed.
Qualifications include: An MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Medical
Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), and at least 5
years of Medical Microbiologist experience demonstrating expertise in routine and complex clinical
microbiology within a high-volume, rapidly changing environment.

An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided and Albertans pay no
provincial sales tax. Options to function as either a contractor or an employee exist. Remuneration for a
Medical Microbiologist in Alberta is based on a salary grid according to years of experience after
certification, which is competitive with compensation in other Canadian jurisdictions. Remuneration range
for a Medical Microbiologist in Alberta is $350,197 to $407,373 annually. The Clinical Section Chief
responsibilities come with an additional annual stipend.
